May Finishing Challenge - Biscornu

Last weekend, I was feeling pretty restless. I ended up starting something new. If you’ve read my blog since the beginning, you’d have seen me mentioned this design before. I even did a floss toss for it back in January. This was as far as I got...

The colour changing was killing me. So I set it aside and thought to meet the May Monthly Finishing Challenge which is to finish a biscornu. I’ve never done finishing of this kind before so this was a real challenge for me. However, that didn’t deter me from having fun with it.
These are the squares I came up with for my biscornu.

The core design is from The Victoria Sampler’s Gazebo Tuffet freebie and the border is modeled after the Pincushion Heart freebie. As you can see, I’ve added my own touch to it with some beads and specialty stitches. Do you like my first timer Rhodes Hearts and the combination of Eyelet Stitches and Satin Stitches for the flowers in the centre? The bottom piece is my own design.
After much head scratching, I finally figured out how to make a biscornu, thanks to instructions from Annette and Finishing School.
What do you think of my first biscornu? The buttons are from a local craft shop.

Yesterday was another great mail day. The silks for Just Nan’s Queen of the Needle finally arrived along with Sweet Threads from Country Cottage Needleworks

I fell in love with this design the moment I saw it and has been craving for it ever since. Drema from Needlecraft Corner offers a package for the first thread pack that includes a piece of 28 count Vintage Lentil Linen from Lakeside Linens which is what I will be using for it.

I hope you’re not sick of looking at floss tosses because after receiving the silks and another fabric from Silkweaver earlier in the week I just can’t resist seeing how the colours would look together.

I need some advice. Do you think the light purple floss is too similar to the fabric? I hope it doesn’t blend in too well until it’s barely noticeable when stitched.

My First LHN

Last Friday, the mailman brought another package to my house. This time, it's five thread packs from Little House Needleworks' Coffee and Tea Series that I won on Ebay.

I'm pretty sure everyone has seen them around by now. When I first saw them, I didn't take much notice but these designs just sort of grow on you don't they? I couldn't wait to get started on them. I decided to stitch the Coffee Series first as I'm still missing the Herbal Tea thread pack (which by the way I've ordered from Mary Kathryn's ONS eHandcrafs). I chose Cappuccino for it's the first design in the Coffee Series.

The thread pack contains Crescent Colours Belle Soie silks. This is the first time I'm stitching with these. I love the subtle variegated colours. In my opinion, the effect of it is pretty stunning when stitched. What I didn't like, however, is that every few stitches, the silk keeps getting tangled up. Is it just me or is everyone else facing this problem? It gets pretty frustrating after a while. Luckily, the smooth texture of the silk makes untangling it easier. Had it been cotton... Gosh, I don't want to imagine how that would end up.
Anyway, this past weekend was a long one. Monday was Wesak Day - a Buddhist celebration. I was supposed to meet up with my SO (Significant Other). It's been more than a year since we last saw each other. He's with the US Navy now based in Japan and like last year, the ship he's attached to was gonna stop by Malaysia during the weekend. We were so looking forward to it. Then he found out, just last week, that unlike last year, his ship wasn't stopping by Port Klang which is near to where I live. Instead, they stopped at Kota Kinabalu which is at East Malaysia. I'm in Peninsular Malaysia aka West Malaysia. East and West - separated by South China Sea. Talk about a huge disappointment.
So... I immersed myself in my stitching. I'm sure you all can relate, there's no therapy like stitching. And this is the result:

I'll be stitching all of them on separate pieces of fabric. I think they'll look nicer framed individually. That also gives me the added advantage of being able to rearrange them on a whim. Now that I've stitched one, there's no going back. LHN designs are addictive...

Lazy Afternoon Again

Contrary to the post's title, I haven't been lazing around this afternoon. I sure wish though, just so I have more time to stitch. Then again, don't we all? Anyway, just writing to show what I've been up to for the past week or so. I'm sure you all can guess by now. Here's my Lazy Afternoon's progress:

She finally has some grapevines above her to protect her from the hot afternoon sun. The leaves and grapes are all stitched using only a single strand of floss. You hardly notice it in the picture but in real life, it does make a huge contrast. Sure gives a depth to the piece.
Today my package from Stitching Bits & Bobs finally arrived. They're having another sale at the moment but unless an item is really cheap, I doubt I'll be ordering from them again anytime soon. Throughout my four week wait, other than an email last week telling me my order has been shipped, I didn't receive any correspondence from them telling me my Mill Hill items were on back order. Luckily I figured out how to check my order status on their website. That and well, I don't want another four week wait before I can fondle my new stash...

Seriously, Mermaid of the Deep Blue really uses that much beads and metallic threads? I've never seen one up close and personal. It must really, really sparkle! Can't wait to see what it'll look like once finished.
Man, I sure am dreaming big. I've yet to start the piece, don't even have the fabric for it yet an I'm already fantasizing on how it'll look like completed. I must be exhausted... Need sleep...

Told in A Garden - Renaissance & Voice of A Shepherd

I've never really cared for the charts in this line until recently, Voice of A Shepherd caught my attention. I was randomly clicking on pictures on an ONS when I saw it. My mum's a Christian with a very strong faith. Somehow, I feel that she'll love it. I know Mother's Day just passed but that doesn't mean I can't give her a present anytime I want to. I'll start on it once the fabric I ordered arrive. I ordered from Silkweaver yesterday... LOL! Am I in big trouble here.
Onto more news, I decided to sign up for a Round Robin with Renée, Dawn and Chris. It will most likely be an open themed/UFO (UnFinished Object) RR. Nothing is concrete yet but I think I'd like to use this as my RR. It has three empty squares left which is perfect for this RR. Been a long while since I've joined one so I'm pretty excited.
Wow, what started out as a quick post turned out to be a long one. Once again, I'd like to say a heartfelt thank you to all of you for your kind words and compliments. You have no idea how much your comments motivates me to continue stitching and keep this blog updated.
Elisabeth, my understanding of a floss toss (someone correct me if I'm wrong) is that you put all the threads used in a design on a piece of fabric to give an idea of how the colours would look against it. Hope that answers your question?

I think I'm gonna put this piece away again, for now. I find it's more of a distraction piece for me, something I'd work on when I can't make up my mind on what to stitch. Chiloe, to answer your question on what's next, honestly, I have no idea. LOL! Maybe it's only because I'm exhausted after a long day at work but I just can't find the motivation to pick up my needle. I really should work on 'Lazy Afternoon' especially since my friend has already moved into her new place but so many other wonderful and yummy designs are calling out to me.

Last week, I received the fat half of Silkweaver's Abracadabra Cashel linen that I ordered.

It's more purple than the pink I expected but I'm still rather please with it. I plan to stitch both Passione Ricamo's Meditteraneo and Just Nan's Queen of the Needle on it. Thus the fat half that I bought.

I'm still impatiently waiting for my package from Stitching Bits and Bobs to arrive. I finally received an email two days ago informing me that my package has been shipped. It's been about three weeks wait so far because unfortunately, some of the Mill Hill items that I ordered were out of stock.

In the meantime, after the DMC news, I decided that it was high time that I kitted up some of my to-be-stitched designs, just in case. I also decided that I really should make a list of my stash in their various kitted up stage in order for me to better keep track. So... (draws in deep breath) here goes nothing:

2008 First Happy Dance

Wow, did I just post a few of days ago? I find it hard to believe that I'm posting again so soon. Then again, remember I said I'll have a finish soon? Well, I kept my word and I can't wait to share my first happy dance of 2008 with all of you. A little late, I know, considering that it's almost May - halfway through 2008. Anyway, here it is... drumroll... ^.^

Did I leave anything out? If so, feel free to ask. Thank you so much for all your compliments on my "L". Carol R, I didn't use the recommended floss or fabric. There wasn't any given. The designer did however suggest Vikki Clayton's hand dyed silk and since I like the blue and red on the sample piece, I decided to stick with that but with a twist of my own - variegated floss. I picked the fabric not only because I thought it would look nicer than just plain white but I wanted to give it an "aged" look. I'm very pleased with the result so far :)

The Capital L

As you can probably guess from the title, yes, I finished the "L" of "Love With A Capital L". Thus, without further ado, here is a close up picture of "L", stitched with Vikki Clayton's Flag II in premium silk.

It took me about one week to finish stitching this! Surprised? Well, I wasn't joking when I said I find it complicated. I think a huge part of that is because I was trying to get the reds and blues to flow nicely against one another so that it would give the illusion that the "L" is actually made out of one length of thread, especially at the parts where it crosses, it would be either red above blue or red below blue and not just a single colour. Does that make sense? I feel like I'm making a muck out of my explanation. Anyway, that effort combined with the frogs that visited uninvited, all I can say is, I'm surprised I got it done in a week. Thankfully, I'm stitching with Vikki Clayton's silk which from what I gather from forums and other stitcher's blogs, doesn't fray so easily. That has certainly proven true to me for I was able to reuse the floss even after frogging. And here's a picture of how the whole piece looks to date:

Flag II sure does matches perfectly with my Examplar Blueberry Soup and Ox Blood, doesn't it? My only regret is that there isn't more purple in the floss to truly make it a tricolour thread. Oh well! I've put this away for now to work on Passione Ricamo's Blond Beauty Cameo. I'm so, so close to a finish I can almost feel a jiggle in my body. A happy dance is certainly on its way. Stay posted!

Yummy Silk

Once again, I've been negligent in posting here. Work has kept me busy. However, I simply could not resist showing off what I've been working on any longer. Ladies and gentlemen (if there are any reading my blog), here is my progress on Love with A Capital L by Papillon Creations

I'm not sure if it's the chart or the silk but I feel as if I'm flying with this. This is the result of stitching on and off for a few hours at night for a period of two weeks. I think I am now addicted to stitching with silk. Vikki Clayton's HDF silk, to be specific. Granted, I've never stitched with other silks before as hers is the first one I tried. I can tell you this much though - it's an experience no stitcher ever should miss. The thread just glides through the fabric. And the feel of it between your fingertips? Heaven. Okay, I'll stop tempting you all now. I'm having so much fun stitching this design. The picture simply does not do it justice. The colour is a lot more vibrant in real life.

I'm working on the "L" at the moment. It's more complicated (I think) and last night and tonight, I am simply too exhausted to draw up the energy to concentrate on it. Thus, progress has come to a screeching halt for now. Don't worry though. you'll know for sure when I get it done ^.^

On another note, I bought more stash. Sigh! I just can't help myself especially when Stitching Bits and Bobs is having a sale. Self restraint? What's that? I bought a piece of fabric from Silkweaver too. Now I'm eagerly waiting for them to arrive in my mailbox. However, my order with Stitching Bits and Bobs have been delayed as some Mill Hill items I ordered are out of stock. Pictures the minute I get em. Promise! Till next time, take care, all. I chose the colours Flag II for the Letter L, Examplar BlueBerry Soup for the primary colour and Examplar Ox Blood for the secondary colour. This will be my first time stitching with silk and I'm so excited. The fibers are so vibrant in real life and lovely to touch. After all that S.E.X., I'll really should concentrate on my stitching. However, my needle has not been completely idle all this time. I've made some progress on "A Lazy Afternoon".My friend will be moving into her new place sometime this month so I had better start working on it more and stop getting distracted. I completely blame my lack of attention on this:

Yes, it's another Passione Ricamo design. Found in the March issue of The Gift of Stitching Magazine it's Blond Beauty Cameo by Laura Lattuada. I completely fell in love with her when I saw her and immediately think she'll look perfect on this piece of fabric I've had for the longest time. It's 28 count Silkweaver's Wildberry Sparkle Reflections lugana. I've been diligently working on her. I named her Elizabeth because she reminds me of the heroine in "Almost Heaven" by my favourite author, Judith Mcnaught with her green eyes and blond hair. Hopefully she'll be finished this weekend so I can concentrate on "A Lazy Afternoon" again. Who knows, I just might have my first 2008 Happy Dance sooner than I expected.

Another New Start

You don't call January Guilt-Free January for nothing. Once again, I've been distracted and stopped working on Romantic Stitcher. So what have I been working on, you all must be wondering. Well, here ya go.

This is "Lazy Afternoon" by Lanarte which is going to be a surprise gift for my friend Adeline who just bought her first apartment and is planning to move in sometime in March. I had a hard time picking out something for her because, when it comes to art and tastes, you just never know. I might like something that she doesn't or I could find something that I know she'll absolutely like which I hated which is a no go either for I just can't bring myself to stitch something I totally dislike. It's gotta balance which makes my choices tougher and more limited. Besides, she didn't give me any guidelines as to how she might decorate her apartment. When I ask her what she'd like me to get for her, she just goes, stitch me something, something big, make it a surprise. Since she doesn't know this blog exist, doesn't stitch nor is she much of a computer person, I feel safe letting all of you into my secret. I chose this pattern for I thought she might appreciate the feminine element of it. Also, when I look at it, it makes me feel relax and lazy just like its name which is how a home should make us feel. That together with the fact that my friend loves reading too, well, I just hope she likes it as much as I do. I got slightly more than a month to finish this, thus I better buck up and stop procrastinating.

Other than that one new start, I've been doing a lot of planning for my projects this year. I won't exactly call it my New Year Resolution since I have no idea when I'll be getting to them but I finally went and bought all the Anchor threads for Lilliput Lane's Cottage Sampler. I was contemplating converting the Anchor threads into DMC but after the Crafty Cat disaster, I decided to stick with Anchor threads instead. I even went as far as to do a floss toss on it. The fabric is Zweigart's Vintage Country Cream (Marbled) 32 count linen, same as the one I'm stitching Romantic Stitcher on. On Friday, I received some fabrics from Sugar Maple Fabrics.They're Serendipity and Shimmering Jellybean. Aren't they yummy? This is the first time I've ordered from SMF and I love it. I have Mirabilia's Garden Verses in mind for Serendipity and Enchanting Lair's Firedance planned for Shimmering Jellybean. Do you think the colours will go well together? I need opinions please. Thanks!

I'm also currently in a debate with myself. Should I or should I not join in the Lavender Angels Stitch-Along? I've already got all the materials for it."Angelica" has been another design that's been in my stash for quite some time. I've just never gotten around to it. The fabric is another opalescent - Skye by Silkweaver. Yup, you guessed it. I love sparklies. Mmm... gonna ponder on it some more.

This and That

I've been tagged by Debi for this meme which I'm supposed to link to five of my previously written posts and have them relate to these five things: Family, Friend, Yourself, Your Love and Anything You Like. Since this blog is all about cross stitch, the chosen posts will definitely be cross stitch related. So here goes...

Family: This post is dedicated to my mum whom I love with all my heart. And the only post I could find that's related to my family. Thus the reason why I chose this post. (I really should stitch something for my dad and my brother too.)

Friend: Made this for my bestest (there really should be such a word in the dictionary) friend in the world, Adeline. She has helped me through a lot of tough spots and rough situations. I'm truly blessed to have her in my life.

Yourself: Now this is a tricky one. I guess I'll pick my last post for everything stitched in it is purely for my own pleasure. So yeah, no further explanations necessary.

Your Love: This is another hard one. The reason I chose this post is the picture at the very end. We got back together the day after my birthday in December last year. Gotta tell you, no one was more surprised than I that we did. Things are still complicated, we're still apart but both willing to give long distance relationship another try. It's hard but then again, when is life (especially when it's something that you want badly enough to put all your effort in to) ever easy?

Anything You Like: I really had trouble making up my mind about this one. In the end I settled for this post. Reason? Sun, sea, sand, beach, vacation, rest and relax. That says it all in the picture. Now who in his right mind wouldn't like that?

Hmm... guess now it's my turn to tag someone. Have never done this before. I'll send it to Chiloe, Juls, Kathy, Beatrice and Jaimie, the first five people who commented on my last post. Thank you all for your kind comments. Of course, it's up to you to decide if you'd like to answer this. And to anyone who reads this and would like to join in the fun, you're definitely welcome to.

On to other things, I need all your help in identifying this project here:

It's a UFO sitting for the longest time way back in my wardrobe that I pulled out the other day. It's one of my first cross stitch that I started along with A Gift of Friendship. The chart is a nameless one that I bought years ago from a LNS and I've been asked a few times for its name. I'd really appreciate it if someone could tell me who the designer is and the name of the design. Can you believe that for such a huge piece, there are only 16 colours? 16 colours for such a life-like picture. Amazing isn't it? I still love it but frankly, I have no idea if I should continue stitching on it for it's stitched on 10 count (yes, you read correctly 10 count) aida with six strands of floss. It's huge so if I continue on, it's gonna cost me a lot of floss. Also, now that I've stitched on evenweave and linen, I really hated the texture of aida, especially in such a big count but that's not all. As it's my first cross stitch, the back is a mess with tons of knots all over the place. Added to that, the crosses are not facing the same way. So there you have it, as much as I love it, stitching on it is not a pleasure for me anymore. See my dilemma? Sigh! Any suggestions on what I should do with it? Thanx in advance.

1 HD, 2 WIPs

Happy New Year, all! May all your hopes and dreams come true this year. I've never been big on new year resolutions but I guess the one resolution I should make is to keep this blog updated. It's been two months since I've last written. Not good. Then again, I don't have a lot to show for those two absent months. In fact, this is the only finish I have to show so ladies and gentlemen, come celebrate a very belated Happy Dance with me.

This is "Crafty Cat" by Margaret Sherry. Finished him about 2 months ago. The original design was stitched with Anchor threads but I used DMC threads instead, which are also provided in the chart but I think the cream colour for his face is too dark. Oh well, he's still cute, isn't he? Getting all tangled up in that mess. However, I'm pretty certain if I had a cat and it did that to my stitchy stuff, cute is definitely gonna be the furthest thing from my mind. Hehe...

As for what I'm working on at the moment, here they are:

"Chorus Line" by Valerie Pfeiffer is stitched on 28 count cream lugana. This is the first time I'm stitching her designs even though I've seen them around for a while now. I really like her birds. They're so fluffy. Unfortunately, after I was done stitching on this bird, another project caught my attention and I've been working on that since.

And here she is, "The Romantic Stitcher" by non other than Laura G. Lattuada of Passione Ricamo. The fabric is Zweigart's Vintage Country Cream (Marbled) 32 count linen. It's been a while since I've picked up something this big so completing her will definitely take me a while. However, I'm having so much fun stitching on her it hardly matters. Her face is stitched over one, a first for me, and I must say I really like the effect thus the extra work is worth it. Just don't expect me to work on her arms and hands anytime soon. ^.^

Pictures Galore

Hey everyone! I'm back. Wow, time sure flies. It has been more than a year since I last posted. Thank you for all your kind words and messages. Life has been hectic to say the least with work and all, at times without access to the internet and coping with a broken engagement, I just didn't have the time (or the heart) to pick up the needle. So once again, I'll like to apologize to those whose Round Robin I had sent back unstitched. You've all been wonderfully understanding. Thank you.

It's been so long and I have so much I'd like to say but as I don't know where to start, I'll post pictures first instead. After all, they don't say a picture is worth a million words for nothing. So here goes... these are the few Round Robins that has returned home.

They're unfinished because we either didn't have enough participants to start off with in the first place or I had to drop out of it. Nevertheless, they're still beautiful and I love them. A heartfelt thank you for letting me participate in the Round Robins. Maybe in time, we sitchers can have some sort of Round Robin Squares Exchange (if there hasn't already been something like this going on) where instead of new Round Robins, we stitched on existing ones with blank squares to complete it for one another. I'm sure for those of us that join Round Robins often enough, we have a number of those lying around.

Well, I probably won't be able to post as frequently as I did before but I'll try my best to keep this blog updated. Before I end here, I'd like to share with you another piece I've stitched. I started this for my then fiance before we broke up because of circumstances beyond our control and I decided to finish it anyway and have it framed up for him. We're still friends and will always be friends (I hope). And I'd like him to know that he'll always have a special place in my heart.

6 Geese-A-Laying

Phew! This is the first I've ever encountered so many French knots in a single pattern. Luckily for me, I had mastered them earlier this year or I would have found them a real pain and goodness knows how long it would've taken me to finish stitching this. Anyway, this is for Kirsty's RR. Now we're officially halfway through the "Margaret Sherry's 12 Days of Christmas RR". So, can anyone tell me, are goose eggs really that pretty and colourful?

I only have one pair of scissors. Here's a pic of it. It's made by Consorzio Premax of Italy. I've been assured that it's good quality scissors and I love the shape and feel of it but barely a couple of months since I bought it, its handles started rusting. I think you can sort of see it in the pic. Embroidery scissors aren't supposed to do this, right? Very disappointed. I've complaint to the shop where I bought it from but since the company isn't responding to any of their emails, I don't think there's much I can do about it. Well, I'm thinking of getting myself a pair of Stork scissors soon. Hopefully this time I'll get my money's worth.
